Our services are delivered by approximately 1,000 employees.
We have a balanced council of 60 members and the executive decision making body is a coalition cabinet which is made up of Labour, Independent, Conservative, Green and Liberal Democrats. An overview and scrutiny committee and various other committees also serve the council.
The council serves the largest population of any district council in the north west and is the second largest in Lancashire by area (576 square kilometres). The boundaries extend to Cumbria and South Lakeland District in the North, North Yorkshire and Craven District in the East, and Wyre Borough in the South.
There are two large urban centres of population, at Lancaster and Morecambe, and a smaller town, Carnforth, to the north, together with an extensive rural area.
We have much to be proud of, both past and present and have many examples of service achievements that are a reflection of the quality of our staff and our collective commitment to do our best for those in the communities we serve. However, we are not complacent and we acknowledge that there is always scope for improvement. Therefore, we have promised to work hard to improve the quality of life for all people in the area, by delivering high quality, responsive services and by working with others to develop the area and its facilities.
We recognise that the demands of local needs and national priorities require us to keep a clear focus on our strategic objectives and ensure that we have the capacity to respond quickly and effectively to current and emerging issues. To this end, we have developed some significant plans, programmes, new structures and relationships that we believe will enable us to move more quickly to seize the opportunities for innovation, partnership working and community leadership.
